Do you have a moissanite stone engagement ring and are you happy with it?

Question by annak: Do you have a moissanite stone engagement ring and are you happy with it?
I am considering a moissanite ring purchase and i wonder if anyone out there owns one? Would you recommend investing in it over a diamond? I am leaning toward it for price reasons and for not supporting the conflict diamonds, child labor, etc., since we can never be really sure where those stones come from.

I didn’t want an engagement ring so I don’t have one. I do have a necklace made with moissanite stones. I get compliments on it all the time and people are always commenting on how it must have cost a fortune. It was only about a $ 1000 which they’re shocked to find out because they think it’s diamonds.

If I had wanted an engagement ring, I probably would have gone with moissanite. It’s shinier and sparkles more than any diamond I’ve ever seen.

If you want it, buy it. It doesn’t sparkle quite the same as a diamond, but if it is in your budget and you don’t want to support the diamond industry, it seems reasonable.

Edit: Funny you should say that dragon girl. One jeweler called it the “mountain dew” diamond for that reason-because the light it reflects looks green/yellow.

Edit #2-I didn’t say it didn’t sparkle as much as-I said the is not the same as a diamond. The cut is the key to sparkle, regardless of the stone. Go try some on and see if you like it on your finger. If you can’t see the greenish tinge, then who cares? We all know the diamond industry is bogus, but the reality is that there are differences between the two stones. You decide.

No. Mossinite has a greenish tinge. People will be able to tell.

I don’t have a moissanite engagement ring, but i do have other moissanite jewelry. I get compliments on it all the time, way more than my other gems. It sparkles quite a bit (more than a diamond even). If you are considering ordering online, I highly recommend you view moissanite in person first. I recommend it for an engagement ring stone for all those who do not wish to have a diamond, but still want a high-quality clear stone. It’s quite popular for those who are morally opposed to the diamond industry, and there are some gorgeous moissanite engagement rings out there.

Some cuts of moissanite show a green tinge, and are not popularly used (the pear shape, and the marquise shape) so these cuts are not commonly used. Other cuts are comparable to a near-colorless (I color) diamond. If you like pear or marquise cuts, artificially enhanced moissanite in these cuts (enhanced to look clearer) is supposed to be available soon. Within weeks.

it does not have a greenish tinge. i think those that think that may be thinking of cheap CZ. moissanite is a beautiful gem. its fire and brilliance far surpass that of a diamond, and it is way more economical. try going to a jewelry store for yourself to see Moisssanite jewelry. some big name stores might try to talk you out of it (why wouldn’t they? they make way more $ $ off of a diamond, the jewelry companies are the ones that said that diamonds were ‘traditional’, gotta love marketing gimmicks). i know JC Penny has them. but yeah. moissanite is crafted to be COLORLESS, so why would it be green?

Moissanite DOES sparkle more than a diamond.

The fact that Moissanite has more brilliance and fire than diamonds, and is harder than rubies, sapphires and emeralds, is just the beginning of why people love Moissanite.

Moissanite is a man made stone, and chosen to be made in a lab because it is so rare.

if you do choose moissanite, get it bezel set because it chips. look at all the chipped estate moissanite on ebay “i bought this ring but it chipped…”

it does have a greenish cast. It is doubly refractive, double sparkles, nice diffraction, nice fire. it is a stunning synthetic gemstone. silicon carbide.

you can get a diamond that is not new. choose an old mine cut, an old european cut, or a transitional cut, all over 100 years old. you can buy an estate stone or use a family stone and have it reset. you can buy a canadian diamond. you do not have to believe the rubbbish out there about blood diamonds.

I would absolutely recommend considering moissanite as a choice, along with diamond. Why buy something without considering the options ? Forget the brainwashing of diamond advertising, and just decide for yourself.

I’ve bought several moissanite jewelry pieces over the last decade, and I am very happy with each one. Each looks the same as the day I bought it.

Regarding durability, moissanite is arguably more durable than diamond overall. Durability includes hardness, toughness, and stability. And looking at total durability, moissanite is better. Toughness is resistance to chipping, and moissanite has better toughness than diamond. Unless you abuse a moissanite jewel, you won’t have a problem.

As for the complaints here about green color/tint, they are not something to worry about. Moissanite, like any diamond you would consider, is “near colorless”. So either diamond or moissanite will not be perfectly clear. BUT, unless you are looking at the stone closely as it lays loose (unmounted) on a white surface, you probably won’t notice the color. Once it is mounted, either moissanite or diamond, that is near colorless, will look wonderful.

I agree, as do the experts, that “cut” is the most important factor (perhaps along with size). Every moissanite is hand cut to ideal dimensions. Whereas diamond is usually cut to maximize size, while allowing variation from ideal dimensions. So to make a comparison, you have to compare moissanite to ideal cut diamond.

By all means, go out and look at moissanite yourself !!! Let your eyes decide. Compare moissanite rings and diamond rings at the same price (the amount you want to spend). I think you’ll find the moissanite is better quality, and larger size, for the same price. Once you shake the diamond brainwashing, and consider moissanite and diamond on their merits, the choice becomes pretty obvious. For me, it’s moissanite. But, you should decide for yourself.

I personally agree that you should see the actual ring/stone in person before buying, unless the seller has a easy return policy. Every moissanite, like every diamond, or every snowflake, is unique.

By the way, never “invest” in jewelry. A diamond is not an investment, certainly not for a consumer. You will never get your money back, let alone make a profit. (Even upgrade plans require that you pay retail for a newer larger stone, so you aren’t really getting your original “investment” back.) But what you like, and plan to keep it an enjoy it for a lifetime, and then pass it on. Moissanite is that kind of heirloom jewel.
